A 24-hour film programme on Charlotte Posenenske.

“Monotonie ist schön” was a continuous 24-hour film programme centered on the German artist and sociologist Charlotte Posenenske (1930–1985). Following the screenings, there was a discussion about the persistent importance of her practice, discuss how it was commodified and ask whether its legacy should – or can – be recuperated from institutional control.

The programme was inspired by a discussion with curator and researcher Ian Wallace’s on his PhD Compromised Values: Charlotte Posenenske, 1966–Present and connects with the catalogue Art & Project. A History. This hefty publication traces a now- defunct Amsterdam-based gallery that opened in 1968 with an exhibition by Charlotte Posenenske.

The film programme “Monotonie ist schön” was free and started on Tuesday 19 December 2023 at 18:00 and ran continuously throughout the night until the next day at 18:00. Posenenske’s only film, entitled Monotonie ist schön (1968), was screened every hour on the hour, followed by a different film each time. The discussion on Charlotte Posenenske took place on Wednesday 20 December at 18:00.

“Monotonie ist schön” was hosted by Brenda Guesnet and Laurens Otto.
